The winter weather can really be draining on the body, especially if you work outside. Even if it's not actually freezing, the wind chill can cut like ice. Wind and freezing temperatures can result in painful frostbite. It is very important to keep yourself and your employees healthy and happy all winter long.
As the temperature outside drops it is important to keep moving so that blood keeps flowing and keeping the body warm naturally. The body will automatically try to keep vital organs warm by constricting the blood vessels near the surface of the skin and redirecting it to internal organs. Feet and hands are particularly vulnerable if the blood flow is constricted from them too much. Try standing and swinging your arms to regain the blood flow to hands and arms.
Another way to stay warm or get warm is to eat since digestion produces heat in the body. Eat something hot either in temperature such as hot cocoa or tea or something hot with capsaicinoids, the substance in peppers that makes them hot. Even though the heat that is ingested is small, it causes the nervous system to send signal of warmth that encourages blood to flow to the extremities. However, it is not good to drink alcohol as that makes the body think it's warming up while it is actually cooling the blood flowing through your body. Smoking also constricts blood vessels and acts to cool the body. Stick with red meat and leafy green vegetables rich in iron. Iron helps produce the thyroid hormone which motivates heat production.
We offer several products that will help you maintain your body heat this winter. Winter hardhat liners help to lock in body heat that would escape from your head. Most of your body heat escapes from your head so it is important to keep it well covered. To keep your hands warm we offer many different types of gloves including fleece lined cowhide drivers that are sure to keep your hands protected from the cold weather. For those who live or work in places where ice and snow reek havoc on side walks and driveways you may want to invest in a pair of slush boots. These waterproof boots are designed to grip the ground as you walk so you will be less likely to slip on ice and they can be worn over your other shoes so you won't ruin them. Pair these with a long raincoat and you'll be ready for the winter, no matter what it might bring.
