Protect Workers from the Cold
The winter weather this year has been the worst in years. It's not a problem for those who work indoors but some of us are not that fortunate.
Freezing temperatures can be dangerous for people who have to work outside in the elements. It is very important to make sure that workers have the proper clothing and equipment to protect themselves during the winter months. Extended time periods spent out in freezing temperatures can cause serious health problems such as frostbite and hypothermia. In some extreme cases, such as prolonged cold water immersion, the result can be death. Keep an eye out for workers who are shivering uncontrollably, have slurred speech, clumsy movements, or confused behavior as these are signs that the person may be suffering from hypothermia.
There are many products that can help keep workers warm. OccuNomix has a whole line of products designed for working in cold temperatures. From winter liners to warming packs they are working to keep those who have to work outside protected from the cold.
OSHA offers a free copy of their Cold Stress Card on their website or by calling (202) 693-1888.
Protect your workers:
- Recognize the environmental and workplace conditions that may be dangerous.
- Learn the signs and symptoms of cold-induced illnesses and injuries and what to do to help workers.
- Train workers about cold-induced illnesses and injuries. Encourage workers to wear proper clothing for cold, wet and windy conditions, including layers that can be adjusted to changing conditions.
- Be sure workers in extreme conditions take a frequent short break in warm dry shelters to allow their bodies to warm up.
- Try to schedule work for the warmest part of the day.
- Avoid exhaustion or fatigue because energy is needed to keep muscles warm
- Use the buddy system - work in pairs so that one worker can recognize the danger signs.
- Drink warm, sweet beverages (sugar water, sports-type drinks) and avoid drinks with caffeine (coffee, tea, sodas, or hot chocolate) and avoid alcohol.
- Eat warm, high-calorie foods such as hot pasta dishes.
- Remember, workers face increased risks when they are taking certain medications, are in poor physical shape or suffer from illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease.
